Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord—a time-travelling humanoid alienknown as the Doctor. He explores the universe in his TARDIS (acronym: Time and Relative Dimension in Space), a sentient time-travelling space ship. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Along with a succession of companions, the Doctor faces a variety offoes while working to save civilisations, help ordinary people, and right wrongs.
The show has received recognition as one of Britain's finest television programmes, winning the 2006 British Academy Television Award for Best Drama Series and five consecutive (2005–2010) awards at the National Television Awards during Russell T Davies's tenure as Executive Producer. In 2011, Matt Smith became the first Doctor to be nominated for a BAFTA Television Award for Best Actor. In 2013, the Peabody Awards honoured Doctor Who with an Institutional Peabody "for evolving with technology and the times like nothing else in the known television universe."The programme is listed in Guinness World Records as the longest-running science fiction television show in the world and as the "most successful" science fiction series of all time—based on its over-all broadcast ratings, DVD and book sales, and iTunes traffic.During its original run, it was recognised for its imaginative stories, creative low-budgetspecial effects, and pioneering use of electronik music (originally produced by the bbc radio.)
Doctor Who's Matt Smith has reportedly filmed his final scenes as The Doctor, ahead of his on-screen exit at Christmas.
He tweeted: "So it's goodnight from me, and it's goodnight from him. That's a wrap. Christmas 2013. Thank you all."
Twelfth Doctor actor Peter Capaldi reportedly visited the set of the special on Thursday (October 3) to film his first scenes in the role.
Smith will appear in two more episodes before departing the long-running BBC series. He will next appear alongside David Tennant and John Hurt in the 50th anniversary special 'The Day of the Doctor'.
Companions Jenna Coleman and Billie Piper will also appear as Clara Oswald and Rose Tyler.

Speaking to flicks and he citu about Capaldi's casting, Piper revealed: "I think it's brilliant. I've always really loved him and admired him. I think he's a brilliant actor, I think he's both absolutely terrifying and credible with comedy.
"I really like the fact that he's a bit older and I think it will open a whole new set of fans. I think it makes absolute sense. It's a really wise choice."
Piper described the upcoming special 'The Day of the Doctor' as a "gift to the fans".

The stunning Doctor Who 50th anniversary trailer aired after Strictly Come Dancing, leaving fans chomping at the bit for the anniversary episode.
With special effects a-plenty, the clip took a trip through time starting with William Hartnell’s first doctor and ending with Matt Smith’s current Doctor standing on a cliff.
Current companion Clara, former companion Sarah-Jane Smith, fourth Doctor Tom Baker, tenth Doctor David Tennant and a Dalek are just some of the treats thrown in for Whovians to appreciate.
Smith can be heard saying: ‘I’ve been running all my lives, through time and space; every second of every minute of every day for over 900 years. I fought for peace in a universe at war. Now the time has come to face the choices I have made in the name of the Doctor.
‘Our future depends on one single moment of one impossible day, the day I’ve been running from all my life. The day of the Doctor.’
